Can Blogging Really Make Money?

So, you’re thinking about starting a blog but you’re not quite sure whether it’s worth it? Let’s talk about that for a minute…

For most people, the idea that you could make $3000+ per month blogging sounds too good to be true. And we all know the saying “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” In this case though, that saying is dead wrong!

Not-So-Easy Money

Blogging has quickly become one of the top most profitable ways to make money from home! Don’t get me wrong though, it’s not “easy” money and it’s not a “get rich quick” scheme. Blogging takes effort and dedication. Anyone can start a blog, but making it profitable takes some work.

If you’re willing to put in the time and effort, you too can finally make a living from home – spend more time with your family, stop with the 9 to 5, forget about living paycheck to paycheck!

So, are you ready to take the first step in being your own boss?

Let’s get started!

3 Steps to Start a Blog

Setting up a blog is easier than you might think. You don’t have to be technically inclined. You just need to know the basics of using your computer. With SiteGround and WordPress, all the tools are right at your fingertips without you needing to know how to code!

Choose a Web Host

SiteGround is a web host. They manage the “server-side” of your blog. The server stores (hosts) all your content to make it available to your readers. You create content and make your blog beautiful using WordPress. SiteGround makes it available, fast and secure.

Pick a Domain Name

ProductiveMotherhood.life is a domain name. The domain is what people have to type to get to your website. You want it to be relevant and memorable.

Install WordPress

WordPress.org is the web’s go-to blog design software. With WordPress, you don’t need to be super techie to create a profitable blog. The only thing better than the software is its price – free!

Why Choose SiteGround?

Using a company like SiteGround means you have your very own website and the ability to do whatever you’d like with it!

If you do your research, and I’m betting you will, you’ll notice there are more than enough web hosts to choose from. Enough to make your head spin, I’d say. Not all hosts are created equal though. You need a company with experience, up-to-date securities, competent customer service, and top-of-the-line services. SiteGround can give you all that and more!

SiteGround has thousands of reviews all across the Internet. Just Google ‘SiteGround reviews” and you’ll see for yourself. People love the company. Even people who established their blogs with other providers have been flocking to SiteGround lately.

I’m sure you’re thinking to yourself now, why can’t I just use a free host like Blogger or WordPress.com? The answer is simple, people know when you’re using a free host and you’re not taken seriously. If you’re not willing to invest in your business, why should anyone else? Plus, free hosts don’t allow you full control of your site. There’s only so much you’re allow to customize because, in reality, you’re just small piece of a larger website.

SiteGround is Affordable!

Using SiteGround to host your website is surprisingly affordable. For the low price of only $3.95/month you get the comfort of knowing your content is secure and being delivered to your readers fast! They also offer larger plans which are still affordable and can accommodate multiple domains.

Step #1: Choose a SiteGround Plan

  • First things first, you’ll need to head over to SiteGround to get signed up. Once there, they’ll walk you through the process of choosing a plan and domain name.

  • You’ll notice three different plan options. The StartUp plan, for $3.95/month, provides you with the superior customer service all SiteGround clients get, a domain, and WordPress.

  • The GrowBig plan allows for multiple websites, which can be useful. I myself have one blog that I use for developing and one that I show to the world. Having the developing blog means I’m able to try out big changes without affecting the site all my traffic is viewing – just in case I break something.

If you choose the GrowBig plan through my affiliate link you’ll get the full year of service for only $5.95 per month. That’s only $2 more each month for double the storage space and premium support. It will bill you for the whole year. But think about it, you’re starting a business for only $72! That’s an amazing deal!

  • The GoGeek plan is most likely going to be overkill for you just starting out. It’s typically for larger companies. Whatever plan you choose though is completely up to you.

Step #2: Register a Domain

  • When trying to decide on a domain name you need to think about what your niche will be. What do you want to write about constantly for years to come? Any niche can be profitable if handled properly. I chose to write tutorials because I love application development. I know that I can discuss this topic for years without getting bored.

  • Once you’ve chosen a niche, brainstorm some word combinations until you find the right one for you. You want it to be easy for people to remember and type.

  • After deciding on a word combination, I like to head over to the GoDaddy website to make sure the domain isn’t already taken.

  • The last thing to keep in mind is how the word combination looks as a URL. The last thing you want is for your domain to inadvertently spell something inappropriate or embarrassing.
Check Domain Availability

Step #3: Enter Information

This step is to both create your SiteGround account and to register your domain.

  • Begin by entering your desired SiteGround username and password.

  • In the following section, enter your personal information.

  • Next, enter your billing information.

Step #4: Complete Registration

At the bottom of the registration page you’ll find the “Purchase Information” section.

  • Verify the information is correct.

  • Decide if you’d like to pay for more than one year’s service at this time. There’s also an option for a 1 month trial period.

  • Pick your desired extra services.

It’s completely up to you whether or not you want people to see your information when they perform a whois lookup. I, personally, like privacy.

SG Site Scanner is another add-on that I recommend. I follow the mantra “better safe than sorry.”

You're Well on Your Way!

You have now signed up with a web host and purchased a domain name.

Who knew you could start a business for less than $200?!

Last But Not Least: Install WordPress

Now, if you don’t want to be the one to install WordPress, don’t worry, you don’t have to. After signing up with SiteGround you can contact their customer service and ask them to install it for you! Talk about getting started on the right foot with them! That’s what they’re there for, so don’t be afraid to let them help!

On the other hand, if you would prefer to do the setup yourself, follow the steps below. Don’t worry, it doesn’t take experience.

Step #1: Get Familiar with Your Control Panel

  • Login to your new SiteGround account.

  • Go to the ‘My Account’ tab where you’ll see a red button which says ‘Go to cPanel’, click it.

  • cPanel is the control panel for your account. Here you’ll find everything from account information, to site statistics, to useful tools. In the section called ‘WordPress Tools’, click the icon called ‘WordPress Installer’.

Step #2: Software Installation Setup

  • Clicking the ‘WordPress Installer’ icon will bring you to a page that tells you all about the WordPress application. You’ll also see a blue button labeled ‘Install’, click it.

  • You now have a setup form on your screen. There are very specific values you’ll need to input so the software will run properly.

    Software Setup:

    • Protocol: most people will have — http:// — in the beginning. If you already have an SSL certificate though, you’ll want to set this value as — https://

    • Domain: from the drop-down menu, choose the domain you just purchased.

    • Directory: this is another option most beginners won’t need to change or set. It will happen by default. If you don’t have any experience working with the ‘server-side’ of a website, I do not recommend selecting your own directory.

Step #3: Site Settings

  • Site Settings:

    • You may give your site any name you’d like as it may be changed at any time. It is mostly for your own reference.

    • The same goes for the site description. This can always be changed later.

    • Next, you’ll see a checkbox with a label asking if you’d like to ‘Enable Multisite (WPMU). As we are only setting up a single website right now, leave this checkbox empty.

Step #4: Admin Account

  • Admin Account

    • This is where you’ll create a login for the WordPress application. You’ll use this information every time you want to work on your website. The username and password are completely up to you.

    • I advise that you make the password very strong. If you don’t take precautions to keep your site safe, it can (and most likely will) be hacked.

    • Password Tips:

      • The longer and more complex your password, the more secure your site. Don’t use common phrases or information like birthdays or anniversaries. A random password is best and should include these variables:
        • uppercase
        • lowercase
        • numbers
        • symbols

Step #5: Language, Plugins, & Theme

  • Choose Language: This is the pretty self-explanatory.

  • Select Plugins:

    • The first checkbox is to limit a user’s login attempts. For security purposes, this is recommended. Limiting attempts helps to prevent ‘Brute Force Attacks’ which, simply put, are attempts made continuously until they are successful.

    • The second checkbox gives you an alternate login option. If you do not want to deal with a long, random password, you may want to select this box. Find out more about Clef.

  • Choose Theme: You may select any theme from the list or keep it on none and install a theme later.

SETUP IS COMPLETE! CLICK ‘INSTALL’!

Login to WordPress

You may now browse to your website. If you didn’t install a theme when setting up WordPress, it won’t look very fancy just yet. But it exists now and that’s what matters!

In order to start adding content to your blog, you need to login to WordPress. Open up your preferred browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, etc.) and type your domain in your address bar with ‘/wp-admin’ at the end
